THRACE. Hadrianopolis. Gordian III. 238-244 AD. Æ Medallion (37mm - 28.90 g). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / Nike on right and Gordian III on left, standing facing one another, erecting a trophy between them; two captives seated on ground at base of trophy. Youroukova - (obverse die V226, reverse type not recorded); SNG Copenhagen -; Varbanov -. Fine/Nice VF, brown patina. The obverse is unusually flat given the amount of detail on the reverse. Perhaps it was planed or partially smoothed away in antiquity for mounting, or perhaps just remarkably poorly struck.
