Description
Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 B.C. Fourrée tetradrachm (31 mm, 15.38 g, 9 h). Pella, ca. 325-315 B.C. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter. Cf. Price 217. Its low weight and a hint of bronze along the edge re the only indications that this coin is a fourrée. Virtually as made.
A very interesting fourrée with a partial but lengthy seam along the edge where the core was covered with a silver outer layer, and with just enough staining to indicate that the interior metal is not silver. Highly unusual.
