Description

Bukka Raya I. 1344-1377. AV pagoda (11 mm, 3.36 g, 6 h). Warrior (King?) striding right, right arm raised in warrior pose / 3-line Kannada legend: Sri Vi / ra Buka / Raya. MNI -; MSI 392. Nice very fine.

On this coin, Bukka Raya depicts himself in a pose that was typical for the Hindu god Hanuman and his propaganda intention is therefore quite clear. In a city (Hampi, the Vijayanagar capital) which has traditionally thought itself to be the site of the birthplace of Hanuman, the ideal servant (to the Lord Rama), Bukka wants his subjects to think of him as a manifestation of Hanuman.
