Phrygia, Ceretapa-Diocaesarea. Antoninus Pius. A.D. 138-161. Æ (29 mm, 13.76 g, 11 h). AV KAICAP ANTΩNЄINOC, bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Antoninus Pius right / KAPATAΠЄΩN ΔIOKAICAPЄΩN, Herakles, nude but for lion's skin headdress, standing facing, resting hand on grounded club and holding lion's pelt draped over arm. Cf. Von Aulock, Phrygiens I 480-3, otherwise unrecorded. Unique and unpublished type from an otherwise rare mint. Black patina with some underlying bronze showing. Fine.
Of the four coins cited by Von Aulock, nos. 480-1 have the laureate head of Antoninus Pius with the obverse legend AVT KAI AΔP ANTΩNЄINOC, while nos. 482-3 have the laureate and draped bust of Antoninus Pius with the same legend as on our coin.
