Little is known about the moneyer L. Flaminius Chilo, but from his cognomen Chilo, we can deduce that he had a prominent set of lips. Unlike the praenomen (here L[ucius]) and nomen (Flaminius), which were dictated by family tradition and birth order, the Roman cognomen normally referred to a distinguishing feature or personal foible, making it more akin to a personal nickname. According to the Latin grammarians Chilo means large or thick lips.
