Anonymous (attributed to Basil II). Ca. 976-1025. Æ follis (22 mm, 4.14 g, 6 h). Constantinople. Barred IC XC across field, bust of Christ Pantokrator facing, raising hand in benediction and holding Gospels / [+] I?SЧ[S]/XRISTЧ[S]/?ASILЄЧ/[?]ASILЄ in four lines. DOC A1; SB 1793. Typical small flan, the obverse detail noticeably better than typically seen. Black patina. Very fine.

It was this Byzantine ruler who first instituted the anonymous folles, which carried no name or portrait of the reigning emperor but displayed the figure of Christ on the obverse, and which dominated Byzantine coinage for most of the next century.
