Description
Ca. 340-265 B.C. AR 1/2 karshapana (16 mm, 1.67 g). 4 punches: Elephant left, triskeles surrounded by pellets (twice), and taurine symbol in square / Blank. Not listed in Rajgor; Mitchiner ATEC 3959-3964. A lovely specimen with bold punches. Very rare and choice. Extremely fine.
The Andhra janapada was located in the southern Deccan, in the Upper Tapti valley. This region was linked with northern India along the Wainganga trade route. It was along this route that goods from the Tapti cited in the Arthashatra reached Magadha.A similar specimen sold for $500 in CNG (Auction 75, Lot 691).
