Description

Ca. 2nd century B.C. Æ coin (20 mm, 7.27 g). Male deity Mahakal (Shiva) standing facing at right; to left, Nandi bull standing right, with indradhvaja above; in centre, tree-in-railing; below, fish in river / Ornate 4-orbed Ujjain symbol, with taurine symbols between each arm. cf. Pieper 321-322 (without indradhavaja). An attractive coin boldly struck on a broad flan. Rare and choice. Very fine.

Lord Mahakal (Shiva) is the local deity worshipped in Ujjain. Finding Shiva and Nandi bull together on a coin is difficult. The indradhvaja seen on this specimen is not recorded by Pieper.
