Description

Sri Satakarni. Ca. 1st century B.C. Æ coin (15 mm, 1.64 g). Elephant advancing left with trunk raised; Brahmi legend (Siri) Satavaha(nasa) above; Ujjain symbol on top / Swastikas in quadrant, with Ujjain symbols around. Not listed in any catalog. Very rare. Very fine.

Kotalingala coins are all very rare. This city in modern-day Andhra Pradesh is considered the first capital of the Telugu people. It may have been the homeland of the Satavahana kings before they expanded their empire across the Deccan. This unrecorded Kotalingala type was issued by Sri Satakarni with Siri Satavahana legend instead of Siri Satakanisa.
