Description

Ca. 4th century A.D. Æ coin (13 mm, 1.19 g). King’s bust right / Wreath. MACW 5167. Rare and interesting. Crude very fine.

A contemporary imitation of the late Roman issues of the 4th century, many of which included a large wreath on the reverse. The Roman imports of exotic goods and spices from the Indian subcontinent in the early centuries AD were paid for in Roman coins that flooded south India from the 1st century AD onwards. Traders in Ceylon were therefore familiar with Roman copper coins, and contemporary imitations were made to cater to the local demand for coinage.
