Description
CRISPUS, Caesar. 317-326 AD. Æ Follis (18mm - 3.16 g). Nicomedia mint. Struck 324-5 AD. FL IVL CRIS-PVS NOB CAE, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left / PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS, camp-gate with no doors and two turrets, star above; SMNB. RIC VII 91/2 var.; LRBC 1077 var.. Good VF, black patina under thick earthen deposits. Struck from the same obverse die as the next lot.
From the Zachary "Beast" Beasley Collection of Camp Gates.
The engraver of this coin tried to use the obverse legend found on the unbroken legend variety (RIC 91). Upon getting to the end of the legend he realized he had run out of room and left the final S off the legend.
