Description

Bosporan Kingdom. Rheskuporis IV. A.D. 242/3-276/7. BI stater (20 mm, 7.06 g, 11 h). B.E. 561 (A.D. 264/5). BACIΛЄWC PHCKOVΠOPIΔOC, diademed and draped bust of Rheskuporis IV right; before, trident / Laureate and draped bust of Roman emperor right; before, I; in exergue, date (AΞΦ). MacDonald 621/1; Anokhin 713; Stanislavskii 685. VF, a few light scratches under tone and minor porosity.

The letter I in the reverse field of this coin is the denomination mark, meaning 10, and made its first appearance the year that this coin was struck. It continued to be used on staters struck during the following year until it was replaced with the letter K, meaning 20, which was used for the next few years until the denomination mark was dropped altogether. Many "K" staters are overstruck on "I" staters, which, as MacDonald points out, illustrates that "the Bosporan kingdom suffered from the same inflationary pressures that beset the Roman Empire at this time." (MacDonald p. 114).
