[Roman Provincial]. Lot of two Biblically related Julio-Claudian Æ from Asia Minor. Includes: Ionia, Ephesus. Claudius, with Agrippina II. A.D. 41-54. Æ (19 mm, 3.44 g, 12 h). Kousinios, episcopus for the fourth time. A.D. 49-54. Laureate head of Claudius and draped bust of Agrippina right, conjoined / Stag standing right. RPC 2624. VF, green patina, some flaking. Agrippina II was the daughter of Germanicus and the mother of Nero, who eventually murdered her. This coin would likely have been in circulation when Paul met Apollos in Ephesus on Paul's 3rd Missionary Journey, ca. A.D. 54 // Lydia, Thyatira. Nero. As Caesar, A.D. 50-54. Æ (15 mm, 302 g, 11 h). Bare head of Nero right; c/m: Chi-Rho monogram within circular incuse / Labrys. RPC 2381. Dark green-black patina with sandy highlights. Although some might be tempted to assign a Christian explanation to the Chi-Rho countermark, this is unlikely. Thyatira is one of the seven cities of Asia Minor to receive a letter in the book of Revelation (see Rev. 2:18-28). Also, Lydia, a seller of fabric dyed purple, was from Thyatira, and is mentioned by name twice in Acts 16. LOT SOLD AS-IS, RETURNS NOT PERMITTED.
Both coins from an American Collection of Biblical and Related Coinage.
