Description

Visigoths, Pseudo-Imperial series. In the name of Valentinian III. 5th century A.D. AV solidus (22 mm, 4.21 g, 6 h). Uncertain mint in Gaul, probably Arelate, ca. 439-455. D N PLA VALENTI-NIANVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valentinian III right / VICTORI-A AVGGG, emperor standing facing, foot resting on human-headed serpent, holding long cross and Victory on globe; R-V//COMOB. RIC 3713. Very rare. Light die-rust and a few light scratches in the fields. Very fine.

According to RIC, the Pseudo-Imperial issues of the Visigoths in Gaul were struck shortly after their defeat in 425/6 by Aetius, probably at Arelate (Arles).
