Description
Gordian III (238-244), Pamphylia, Perge in alliance with Side, Æ, 28.06g, 36mm. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, holding spear and shield decorated with gorgoneion / Distyle temple, with eagle in pediment, containing simulacrum of the Pergaean Artemis and Athena of Side, holding spear and Victory. SNG France -; SNG Cop. -; SNG von Aulock -; BMC -; Franke-Nollé 1650. Very fine. Extremely rare, Franke-Nollé citing two specimens (London BM 1970-9-9-155 and Munzen un Medaillen 41, 493- this specimen). Ex Münzen und Medaillen 41, 18/19 June 1970, lot 493
