Description
Antiquities. Roman. Ca. 1st-3rd centuries A.D. Bronze applique (49 x 50 mm mm, 24.56 g). Featuring the head of Medusa. These were usually used as a fitting for furniture or a chest. Three mounting holes at periphery, two still occupied by the small bronze tacks used to affix it. Attractive green patina. When held up to the light there are a few pinprick holes, nearly imperceptible when viewed by reflected light.
Medusa was thought to protect the owner's property, thus this would have made a fitting plaque attached to a small chest or container that perhaps held important possessions.
