Description

Watermelon Crystal and Berber Silver Necklace. A necklace of watermelon crystal lentil beads and Berber silver bicone spacer beads, set with a genuine silver denarius of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus. The clasp is a sterling silver toggle.

Lucius Septimius Severus (ruled A.D. 193-211) hailed from a distinguished local family of equestrian rank from Leptis Magna in North Africa, and likely had Berber and Punic ancestry.

About the Artist

Susan Welsh has always been interested in art. She has visited most of the major European art museums, and has served as a Docent at the Los Angeles Museum of Art. After coming to the Santa Barbara area, internationally famous for its artists and skilled artisans, she pursued an intensive study of jewelry making under Janice Lorber and goldsmith Brian Meeks, later specializing in fine enamel work under Margot Neiderer.

Susan’s creations have appeared in nationwide competitions, galleries and art shows, and are sought after by collectors. She particularly enjoys creating fine art enamels interpreting coins, paintings and sculptures, and is noted for her ability to capture fine detail in this difficult medium. Susan’s lifelong interests in ancient history and ancient art closely harmonizes with those of her husband, professional numismatist David Welsh.
