Lot 401: ANTIQUITIES, Moche monkey olla

A lovely Moche polychrome olla from Peru, c. 500 - 700 AD. This elegant footed vessel is 6" high, 5-3/4" in diameter and is decorated with three animated monkeys molded in high relief. They are each holding an object, perhaps a tasty fruit and appear excited. The monkeys are separated by panels of geometric designs, including step-fret symbols, associated with a fertility motif and the flared spout is decorated with a star design. An unusually expressive example with good paint and mineral deposits. Ex Espinoza estate.
