Governors of Tabristan, al-Fadl b. Sahl, AD 811-817, AR ½ dirham (2.02 gm; 24 mm). Tabaristan mint.Dated PYE 161. A-K73, Malek-202. Obverse bust as on the hemidrachms of Sulayman, name al-fadl bin sahl in ObQ4 and his title dhu'l-ri'asatayn in ObQ1, both in Arabic, mint & date in Pahlavi. This type is the last half drachm of Sasanian style struck at Tabaristan, and is the rarest of the entire Tabaristan gubernatorial series. Al-Fadl b. Sahl, having sided with al-Ma'mun during the caliphate of al-Rashid, was rewarded with the governorship of all of the east and the title Dhu'l-Ri'asatayn ("Lord of the Two Commands"). Al-Fadl was assassinated at the bath house in Sarakhs in AH202. Choice Good EF. Lightly toned. Extremely rare.
