Description

12 CAESARS: Nero Orichalcum Sestertius, AD 54-68, (35.5mm, 27.27g). Lugdunum Mint, AD 65. Obverse: Laureate head of Nero right, globe at point of truncation. Reverse: Triumphal arch, with wreath hung across it, surmounted by the emperor in facing quadriga accompanied by Pax and Victory, flanked by two soldiers; statue of Mars in side niche. RIC --, cf. RIC 149-150 (with Aegis and bust left). Apparently an unrecorded legend / type combination for Lugdunum (or Rome, for that matter). Wonderful portrait, pleasing light green patina. Ex 2018 Heritage, Auction 3064, Lot 32287. Choice VF, close to EF but for some edge roughness. Appears to be a rare type. See note below.Note: The broad, flat style of this type and the extended bust ending in a globe (partially off the flan) clearly mark this sestertius as a product of the Lugdunum mint; however, RIC does not list a Lugdunum sestertius with this legend variant, and the Rome issues of the same type are all bust variants.
