Description

Octavian. 30-29 BC. AR Denarius (19mm - 3.82 g). Uncertain Italian mint, possibly Rome. Laureate head of Octavian right, as Apollo / IMP CAESAR across fields, Rostral column with six prows projecting from the sides and two anchors on column, surmounted by a nude statue of Octavian holding a scepter and a parazonium. RIC I 271; CRI 423; BMCRE 633; RSC 124. VF, toned, nice metal.

The reverse shows the rostral column decreed by the senate celebrating Octavian's defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at Actium. The column was set up on the Palantine in the piazza before the temple of Apollo.
