Description
Seleukid Kingdom. Philip I Philadelphos. 95/4-76/5 B.C. AR tetradrachm (24 mm, 15.52 g, 12 h). Antioch or an uncertain eastern(?) mint. Diademed head of Philip I right / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩ[Σ] ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ [Φ]ΙΛΑΔΕΛΦΟ[Υ], Zeus seated left, holding Nike and scepter; below throne, static control; in exergue, N(?); all within laurel wreath border. Cf. SC 2464a; HGC 9, 1320. Good very fine.
The control in the exergue looks like the letter M or a monogram derivative of the letter M. However, there are no known Philip I tetradrachms with this control. It is either a new control or perhaps the known control letter N with a die-break on the edge.
