A cartonnage panel depicting the Ammit, “devourer”, Late Period, c. 664 - 30 BC, looking back over its shoulder and holding the ‘feather of truth’ in its right paw. 3 ¼” x 2 ¾” (8.3 x 6.9 cm). Attractive with all original paint. Mounted in a small protective frame. Ammit was the feared devourer of the heart and stood by the “Weighing of the Heart” ceremony in the afterlife, just waiting to pounce on the heart should it weigh more than a feather and prove to be unpure.
