Description

Macedonian Kingdom. Antigonos II Gonatas. 277/6-239 B.C. Æ (17 mm, 4.65 g, 12 h). Uncertain mint in Macedon. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet / B A across field, Pan standing right, holding wreath, erecting trophy; in upper left field, monogram of Antigonos. Cf. SNG Alpha Bank 1039-45; cf. Draganov 698-9. Unpublished variety. Red-brown and green patina. Well centered and preserved. Very fine.

On all published specimens of this common type in the major collections and standard references on Macedonian coins, the monogram of Antigonos is found between the legs of Pan. This seemingly unpublished example has the monogram in the upper left field of the reverse.
