Lot 450: An Iron Meteorite
AUCTION: Pars Coins (Auction 356)
- Sold Winning Bid: $65
- 6 Bid(s)
Description
An Iron Meteorite (20.54 gm; 28mm x 19mm x 10mm). Composed mainly of iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni) in the form of two nickel-iron alloys, kamacite and taenite and is several times heavier than any ordinary rock. Due to their metallic makeup and extraordinary weight, iron meteorites are easy to tell from ordinary rocks. Because they rarely break up in the air and suffer much less from the effects of ablation during their passage through the atmosphere, they are usually much larger than stony or stony-iron meteorites. Nice find patina.
