Italy, Venice, Candia (Crete), Giovanni Corner, 1624-1630. 60 Tornesia. Lion of St. Mark standing left, head facing, resting paw on gospel, additional star below S / TOPNESIA// E?HNIA, rosette flanked by six pointed stars above, rosette below, 5.90g. Paolucci 892. Very Fine and an extremely rare variety with spelling mistake on the reverse and an additional star on obverse. Ex WAG 43, September 2007, lot 2443, ex Dimitris Loulakakis collection. The coins of Candia (Venetian Crete) are known to have varieties and errors. This particular error is extremely rare and never encountered. The engraver, most likely coming from Italy was not proficient in the Greek language which led to this mistake.
