Italy, Venice, Candia (Crete), Giovanni Corner, 1624-1630. 60 Tornesia. Lion of St. Mark standing left, head facing, resting paw on gospel / TOPNESIA// E?HNTE, rosette flanked by six pointed stars above, rosette below, 5.72g. Paolucci 892. Fine and a rare variety with spelling mistake. Ex Dimitris Loulakakis collection. The coins of Candia (Venetian Crete) are known to have varieties and errors. In this instance, the engraver was most likely coming from Italy and was not proficient in the Greek language which led to this mistake.
