Description
Low Countries, HOLLAND Counts. Dirk IV (1039–49). Silver penny / denar, Rijnsburg, 0.51 gms; 17 mm. Carolingian style church on arc with cross in centre. Pellet either side. +RINESBVRG / Small central pelleted cross. AL E? / ET BT arranged around in cross form. All in quatrefoil with pelleted annuets in angles. Ilisch, (JMP 1997/8) pp. 153–4, no. 11.1. Some weakness on reverse, otherwise Very Fine and Very Rare. The first coin of Holland. Ilisch records seven specimens. The example in the De Wit collection (Künker, 121, lot 715) was said to be the only one in private hands though at least one other has appeared since.
