Description
Italy, Venice, Candia (Crete), Salvatori o Fides Publica, 5 lire, Emergency issue minted under the decree of 10 July 1650. Saint holding gospels, L-V / FIDES // PUBLICA // 1650, lion of St Marc above, 4.36g. Paolucci 883. Very Fine or better for issue and extremely rare (R4 in Paolucci). Ex Nomisma 49, May 2014, lot 1315, ex Dimitris Loulakakis collection. A coin struck during the time of the siege of Candia by the Ottomans which lasted for 21 years and is possibly one of the longest known sieges in history.
