Italy, Venice, Candia (Crete), Salvatori o Fides Publica, 5 lire overstruck on 2 1/2 soldini, Emergency issue minted under the decree of 10 July 1650. Saint holding gospels, L-V / FIDES // PUBLICA // 1650, lion of St Marc above, 4.82g. Paolucci 883. Very Fine or better for issue and extremely rare. Ex Dimitris Loulakakis collection. A very interesting and extremely rare example of this rare emergency issue during a time when the Venetians were trying to withstand the Ottoman siege of the capital, one of the longest known sieges in history (1648-1669).
