Description

Caria, Mylasa. Ca. 450-400 B.C. AR hemiobol (8 mm, 0.46 g, 6 h). Facing forepart of lion / Scorpion with tail to right within incuse square. SNG Keckman 917; SNG Kayhan 934-8. Light porosity. Very fine.

From the Scorpion Collection.

Mylasa served as the capital of Caria under the Achaemenid Persians, but it was only after 395 B.C. that it became the center of a distinct Carian satrapy. This coin was struck before this satrapal reorganization and features the lion, a traditional early coin type in Caria and Lydia and a scorpion, which enjoyed some local popularity in Caria, but which was rare elsewhere.
