Syria, Coele-Syria. Damascus. Otacilia Severa. Augusta, A.D. 244-249. Æ (27 mm, 20.29 g, 12 h). M [OTACILIA] SEVERA(?), diademed and draped bust of Otacilia Severa right, set on a crescent / COL ΔAM[A] METRO, she-wolf standing right, suckling twins; behind, standard inscribed [LEG]/VI R in two lines; in exergue, head of ram right. Cf. Rosenberger 41 (legend in standard); SNG Hunterian -; cf. SNG Righetti 2156 (same); cf. BMC 25 (same); cf. Lindgren & Kovacs 2147 (same). Rare. Attractive earthen-green patina. Nearly very fine.
The coins cited all have LEG/VI F/R inscribed on the standard behind the she-wolf. BMC also notes a further specimen with what appears to be F C as the last two letters on the standard. Ferrata, fidelis and constans were all epithets of Legio VI, which was at one time quartered in Syria.
