Brown patina, edge split and light roughness. Very fine. Either a contemporary imitation, or more probably a modern forgery. LOT SOLD AS-IS AND MAY NOT BE RETURNED.
A duplicate from the RBW Collection of Roman Republican Coins. Purchased privately from Dick Schafer, 4 December 1998, for $25.
The coin comes with notes by both RBW and Dick Schafer. RBW wrote on his envelope "unofficial?" while Dick Schafer wrote on his ticket "FAKE" with further explanation that the coin comes from a group of fakes originally purchased by McClymond on 19 October 1933 for 33 1/3 cents. The edges of the coin are flat and the style of the engraving is coarse.
