ROMAN EMPIRE. Hadrian. AD. 117-138. Bronze Medallion (44.72 gm; 38 mm). Struck in Rome, ca. AD. 129-130. Obverse: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS, laureate and draped bust of Hadrian left, viewed from behind, border of dots. Reverse: COS III P P below Victory in galloping biga right, holding whip, no border. References: cf. RIC 2867 and pl. 209 (in ornamental frame); Gnecchi (I Medaglioni Romani II) p. 4, 14 and pl.38, 8 (citing specimens in Paris and Weber Collection; Strack (Untersuchungen zur römischen Reichsprägung des zweites Jahrhunderts II) 495; Mittag (Römische Medallions, Caesar bis Hadrian) 79; Cohen II, p. 147, 483 (citing Paris specimen) — possibly all from the same dies; cf.Toynbee (Roman Medallions) pl. XL, 2 (for this reverse type but with different obverse, possibly from the same reverse die). Choice Good VF/ VF with a powerful portrait. A handsome example of the very rare medallic issues of Hadrian, glossy dark patina but with some smoothing in the field. Comes with David Sear's Certificate of Authenticity.
