Description

A choice Maya “poison bottle” from Guatemala, ca. 400 – 800 AD. Although popularly known as poison bottles, as some are found to contain cinnabar (highly toxic mercury sulfide), many were in fact used to store snuff. This fine creamware Tiquisate example is 2-1/2” high and depicts a Monkey Deity adorned with large ear ornaments. Superbly detailed, good mineral deposits and root marks. Ex Kahn collection. Value range: $500 - $750
