Description

A lot of 3 ancient terracotta lamps from the Levante. The first is a Byzantine type, 5th - 7th Century AD, the body round with sharp carination, the shoulder flat and bordered by a ridge, another ridge around the fill hole. Two bands of decorations consisting of an open scroll motif and a geometric motif. The wick-hole is at front without spout, a conical handle at rear, and a ring base on the bottom, D: 3 ¾” (9.8 cm). The second is another Byzantine lamp, 5th - 7th Century, round-bodied with sharp carination and flat base. The shoulder is flat with raised geometric decoration, palm-frond flanking the wick-hole, a raised ridge around the fill-hole and a small conical handle, D: 2 ½” (6.4 cm). The last is an Islamic slipper lamp, c. 7th - 9th Century AD, ovoid, with sharp carination, the shoulders, decorated with geometric devices, and a flat panel connects the fill and wick holes. The base is flat, a flat panel bordered by ridges on the underside of the spout. L: 4” (10.2 cm). Each is intact, the second with minor chipping to the handle and light earthen deposits.
