Description

CHINA: Thailand Siam Porcelain Gambling Token, 2.9g. Siamese gambling tokens, "pee," were used c. 1760–1875. Pee is a form of the Wade ? "pi". They should strictly speaking be called "bi". Originally tokens for gambling, these small porcelain tokens became popular as petty coinage. They come in all variety of forms: round, square, and rectangular. Some have inscriptions in Chinese or Thai, some have a pictorial design. There are several collections of these in museums around the world, including the British Museum, the Museum Volkenkunde (Leiden), and the Sammlung Köhler-Osbahr (Duisburg). EF.
