Description

Syria, Seleukis and Pieria. Laodikeia ad Mare. 1st century B.C. Æ (18 mm, 4.13 g, 12 h). Year 9 of the Caesarean Era (40/39 B.C.). [ΛΑΟΔΙΚΕΩΝ], wreathed head of Dionysos right / [Ι]ΟΥ[ΛΙΕΩΝ Τ]ΩΝ Κ[ΑΙ], scorpion; in inner left field, Θ; in inner right field, [ΔΙ](?). Cf. RPC 4415-6 (years 3 and 4, respectively), otherwise an unpublished date; cf. HGC 9, 1411; cf. DCA 576. A new date for the issue. Very rare type. Red-brown patina, rough surfaces. Fine.

From the Scorpion Collection.

RPC records only years 3 (46/5 B.C.) and 4 (45/4 B.C.) for this scarce issue from Laodikeia, and a check of all the supplements shows no additional dates have been recorded since RPC was first published. However, the date is recorded for the Helios/Artemis type of this same denomination, and RPC mentions when discussing the 'pseudo-autonomous' series that as at Apamea, more than one design seems to have been struck for the same denomination at the same time (emphasis added; RPC I p. 635). Neither Hoover, HGC 9, or Cohen, DCA - both recent publications - record additional dates.
