Diademed and radiate head of Antiochos IV right / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤ-ΙΟΧΟΥ, Apollo seated left on omphalos, testing arrow and resting hand on grounded bow; in left field, monogram. SC 1486; HGC 9, 727. Nice for the type. Black patina with earthen highlights. Very fine.
From an American Collection of Biblical and Related Coinage.
A note from the collector: Antiochos IV Epiphanes, son of Antiochos III the Great, sacked the Temple in Jerusalem and forced worship of Greek gods. The Jews revolted and Antiochos lost the conflict to Judas Maccabee who purified and rededicated the Temple, an event upon which the Festival of Hanukkah is based.
