Judaea, Herodian Kingdom. Herod II Archelaus. 4 B.C.E.-6 C.E. Æ prutah (17 mm, 1.63 g, 3 h). Jerusalem, ca. A.D. 1. HPωΔOY, grape bunch on vine, small leaf on left / ЄΘNAPXO[Y] (Y missing from the die), tall crested helmet with cheek guards; to lower left, caduceus. TJC 73a; Hendin 1196; RPC 4917. Full inscriptions despite very interesting flan flaw, nice desert patina. Very fine.
From an American Collection of Biblical and Related Coinage.
A note from the collector: Archelaus' coins do not bear the title 'King' as did the coins of his father Herod I. Surely Archelaus desired a kingship, but after sailing to Rome for an appearance before Caesar Augustus he was granted only the title of 'Ethnarch.' This coin bears an unusually clear reading of that title. The more common types of Archelaus' coinage include only 'ЄON' as a three letter abbreviation of the title.
