Description

Matienus. Ca. 179-170 B.C. Æ quadrans (18 mm, 7.41 g, 12 h). Rome. Head of Hercules right, wearing lion's skin headdress; behind, three pellets / (MAT) above, ROM[A] in exergue, prow of galley right; before, three pellets. Crawford 162/6a; Sydenham 321d; BMCRR 629. Very rare - only six specimens of both varieties (162/6a and 162/6b) in Paris. Brown patina. Very fine.

A duplicate from the RBW Collection of Roman Republican Coins. Purchased privately from CNG, 6 November 1995.

RBW thought the monogram above the prow was double struck, and that instead of it being MAT it was simply AT. Although the right half is weakly struck, it does seem to be MAT to this cataloguer.
