Marcus Aurelius. A.D. 161-180. Æ sestertius (30 mm, 27.24 g, 12 h). Rome, A.D. 175. M ANTONINVS AVG GERM SARMATICVS, laureate head of Marcus Aurelius right / TR P XXIX IMP VIII COS III, S C across field, Annona standing facing, head left, holding grain ears over modius and cornucopiae. RIC 1154; MIR 18, 313-6/30. Brown and tan patina. Nearly very fine.
Comes with a very old European collection envelope, probably from the firm of Robert Ball Nachf.
Robert Ball of Berlin started selling coins professionally in 1887. When he died in 1904, the business was taken over by Hugo Grünthal who ran the firm as Robert Ball Nachfolger until he was forced to close the business in 1934 after the National Socialists came to power. The remaining inventory was sold in two sales by Grabow of Rostock in 1939 and 1940. Although the envelope does not have the printing Robert Ball Nachf. (Berlin) on the back of it, it came with a group of coins all of which had envelopes that did, and is probably from his stock that was sold by Grabow.
