Description

Britain, North Thames Region. Trinovantes. Early uninscribed issues. Before ca. 40-30 B.C. AR unit (14 mm, 1.02 g, 10 h). Thatcher's Sister type. Head with large pointed nose and corded crescents for hair right / Anuulate horse right; above, waterspout motif. ABC 2383; Van Arsdell 1558; BMC 376; SCBC -. Very rare. Toned, irregular flan as often seen. Good very fine.

From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex Rudd 93 (May 2007), 43.

The Trinovantes were a tribe centered in Essex and southern Suffolk who by the time of Caesar's invasion were already suffering the depredations of their neighbors, the Catuvellauni in the north and the Cantiaci in the south. In fact, the attribution of this coin as Trinovantian is uncertain; it may in fact be a Catuvellaunian issue.
