Judaea, Herodian Kingdom. Herod I. 40 B.C.E.-4 C.E. Æ 8 prutot (25 mm, 11.38 g, 1 h). Samarian mint, perhaps Sebaste, regnal year 3 (38/7 B.C.E.). BAΣIΛEΩΣ HPOΔOY, tripod; in left field, date (L Γ); in right field, monogram; all within wreath / Helmet with cheek guards flanked by palms. TJC 44; Ariel and Fontanille type I, dies O8/R65 (this coin illus.); Hendin 1169. Lovely desert green patina with earthen-orange highlights. Choice very fine.
