Description

Maximianus. First reign, A.D. 286-305. Æ follis (25 mm, 8.11 g, 6 h). Contemporary imitation(?). London, ca. A.D. 300 onward. IIV C MAXIMIIINVS P M VG (sic), laureate head cuirassed bust of Maximianus right / GENIO POPV-LI ROMANII (sic), Geniius standing facing, head left, holding patera and cornucopiae. Cf. RIC 17. Scarce and quite handsome. Nice green patina. Good very fine.

The obverse legend was meant to read IMP C MAXIMIANVS P F AVG, but either due to carelessness or simple incompetence it did not come out quite right. Our coin also has an extra I attached to the end of the reverse legend, and the engraving of Genius is rather crude. RIC p. 125, note 1, mentions an example of this coin in Oxford with an engraving error in the obverse legend (P P AVG as opposed to P F AVG).
