Macedonia, Philippi(?). Tiberius. A.D. 14-37. Æ (18 mm, 5.14 g, 11 h). TI AVG, bare head of Tiberius right; c/m: AK monogram within rectangular incuse / Two priests plowing right. RPC 1657; SNG ANS -; Howgego -. Green patina, slight granularity. Very fine.
From the Maple Leaf Collection.
RPC tentatively attributes this coin to Philippi in Macedonia but notes that the distribution of finds runs from Illyria and Moesia all the way to Armenia. Several have been found in excavations at Philippi, and a die-link with another coin found at excavations in Thasos suggest a mint in the region. The countermark on the obverse has not previously been recorded, but countermarks consisting of Greek letters or monograms are common on these coin.
