Description

GALBA. 68-69 AD. Æ Dupondius (29mm - 13.52 g). Rome mint. IMP SER GAL-BA CAE AVG TR P, laureate head left / PA-X AV-GVST, S-C across fields, Pax standing left, holding branch in right hand, cornucopia in left. RIC I -; BMCRE -; BN -. Pleasing VF, brown patina with lighter high points, some light roughness in the fields.

An interesting coin that is unpublished in the standard references. This coin shares it's obverse die with BN 179 and it's reverse die with BN 183 (and probably BMC 124 but it's not illustrated). BN 179 is struck such that the obverse legend is not visible from 2-6 and RIC records this coin as RIC 362, but RIC 362 has CAES in the obverse legend. RIC does not record this obverse legend with a left facing bust.
