Constantine I. A.D. 307/10-337. Æ follis (23 mm, 3.80 g, 6 h). Treveri, A.D. 313-315. CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, laureate and cuirassed bust of Constantine I right / SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI, Sol standing facing, head left, extending arm and holding globe; T-F//PTR. RIC 42 (r3). Heavily clashed reverse die with a clear outline of Constantine. Brown patina. Good very fine.
From the WJP Brockage Collection.
The collector purchased this coin thinking it was a re-struck brockage strike since the outline of Constantine on the reverse is so clear. We believe it is simply a nice example of a coin struck from a clashed reverse die. Clashing is an error that occurs during striking, when one or both dies are damaged by hitting them together without a planchet between them, which in turn causes parts of the image of one die to be impressed upon the other. Coins made from a clashed die receives the impressed image of the other die.
