Description

Gratian. A.D. 367-383. Æ (17 mm, 2.45 g, 6 h). Alexandria, A.D. 379-383. D N GRATIA-NVS P F AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Gratian right / CONCOR-DIA AVGGG, helmeted Roma enthroned facing, head left, holding globe and spear, right leg bare; Θ//ALEA. Cf. RIC 9a.1; LRBC 2871. Scarce issue and mint for Gratian. Reddish-brown patina. Good very fine.

Not published with the Θ in field (which on this coin looks like an O). LRBC notes the field mark Θ for Valentinian II (only) in this issue, but shows it as an O, just like we see on this coin of Gratian. RIC 11 (a coin of Valentinian II with the same reverse legend, but Constantinopolis instead of Roma) also has an O in the left field. There appears to be no other mention of field marks for this issue of small Æ.
