Description

Justin I. 518-527. Æ pentanummium (15 mm, 1.89 g, 6 h). Thessalonica. D N IVSTI-NVS AG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Justin I right / Large Є with star above and below central bar; all within wreath. DOC -; cf. MIBE 73; cf. D. M. Metcalf, Folles and fractional copper minted at Thessalonica under Justin I, JNG XXX (1980), 71-2; cf. SB 80b (all with pelleted border instead of wreath on rev.). Unique with wreathed reverse, but otherwise one of only three known pentanummia of Justin I from Thessalonica. Dark brown patina with orange-earthen highlights. Nearly extremely fine.

Metcalf records only two pentanummia of Justin I from Thessalonica, both with beaded border reverse. At the time of publication of their respective catalogues, there were no examples in the collections of Dumbarton Oaks, the British Museum, or in the Bibliothèque Nationale.
